Charterers Liability Insurance

Once a contract is entered into to obtain a vessel, whether for a single voyage or for a period, that party will be considered a charterer, and certain liabilities cannot be avoided.

We offer cover for any type of Charterer : tramping operators, liner services, commodity traders, NVOCC, operators in off-shore, cruise and ferry vessels, tugs and barges, etc

Covers

  • Legal liability (non-contractual liabilities against the Assured as charterer of the vessel
  • Contractual liability from clauses in Charter Parties, Bills of Lading or other contracts of carriage (as approved in the underwriting process)
  • Cargo liabilities as per approved Charter Parties and Bills of Lading
  • Liabilities for damages to the chartered vessel (from cargo handling, by cargo, by unsafe port or berth, by off-spec bunkers)
  • Other P&I liabilities (personal injury, damage to third party property, pollution, stowaways, general average)

Additional covers

Legal Expenses Cover (FD&D)

Covering legal expenses in pursuing or defending disputes/claims during the operations of the chartered vessel. 

Cargo Owners Legal Liability 

Additional coverage for a charterer, who is also the owner of the cargo on board the chartered vessel. The cover is based on the Charterers Liability Policy, but cover is extended if the claim is made against the Assured as cargo owner.

War risks 

The charterers liability insurance includes a standard war risks cover. This excludes areas which are notified as ‘excluded areas’. If vessels are trading in excluded areas it is possible to obtain a buy back of war risks in those excluded areas.

Bunker insurance

This covers the value of the bunkers on board belonging to the time charterer of the vessel. This applies to the bunkers taken over from the Shipowner on delivery and any bunkers purchased during the charter period. The assured will be indemnified when bunkers are physically lost or damaged caused by an incident of the chartered vessel.
